If you've been around about the Royal Mile during the last couple of weeks you will have seen charming wee munchkins in gorgeous Korean national costumes posing very politely for the click of cameras. Perhaps, you've also wished you could put a couple in your pocket and take them home to arrange on the mantelpiece. Instead, you should go and see their show. However much these delicate and very beautiful children might resemble porcelain dolls to the casual eye, when the house lights go down and the spotlights go up they transform into accomplished performers, brimming with energy and bursting with talent.These enchanting and elegant performers herald from Seoul Theatre, a children's company which has operated in English since 1995 with ages ranging from 4 to 19. The company focuses as much on education as entertainment, and it is easy to see that these performers have worked very hard to make their work seem effortless. Their timing is perfection, their gestures graceful and assured. Even the youngest sing and move like angels. The story is simple and familiar: a tale of true love almost thwarted by social conventions and circumstances. The loving young couple are separated when the boy's father sends him to the emperor's court to better himself. A local potentate, greedy and evil, falls for the young bride and when she rejects his advances, she is incarcerated and all the people suffer as the villain imposes extortionate taxes on the people. Happily, your young hero's virtues have caught the emperor's eye, and he is sent to investigate the disruptions taking place in this remote province. The production values are excellent: the costumes in particular are a feast for the eye. Scenery is replaced with projections onto a back-cloth, which is a flexible as well as aesthetically pleasing. This is a show which will inspire our own children. So, mums and dads and grandmas and granddads throughout Edinburgh have until the 27th to take their own wee darlings for a real treat.Jackie Fletcher

만약 당신이 지난 몇 주 동안 로얄 마일(Royal Mile) 부근을 지나쳤다면 눈부시게 화려한 한국의 전통의상을 입은, 매력 넘치는 작고 귀여운 꼬마들이 아주 예의 바르게 ‘찰칵’ 하는 카메라를 향해 포즈를 취하는 모습을 볼 수 있었을 것이다. 아마, 당신 역시 그 꼬마들 몇 명을 호주머니에 집어 넣어 집으로 가져와서 벽난로 앞에 진열해 놓고 싶다는 생각을 했을 지도 모르겠다. 그러나, 그대신, 당신은 그들의 공연을 보러 가야 한다. 무심결의 눈으로는 이 연약하고 아름다운 아이들이 깨지기 쉬운, 자기로 만들 인형들처럼 보일 수도 있을 것이나, 객석의 등이 어두워지기 시작하고 무대 위로 스포트라이트가 비추기 시작하면, 그들은 넘쳐 흐르는 에너지와 폭발하는 재능을 발산하는 뛰어난 배우들로 변신한다. 매혹적이고 우아한 자태를 자랑하는 어린 군사들은 ‘극단 서울’의 배우들로, 이 극단은 1995년부터, 4살부터 19살까지의 어린 배우들과 함께, 영어로 공연을 올려왔다. 엔터테인먼트와 더불어 교육에 또한 크게 초점을 맞추며, 어린 배우들이 거침없이 선보이는 공연 속에서 그 동안 얼마만큼의 노력을 해 왔는지를 눈으로 증명해 보였다. 작품에 있어서 그들의 타이밍은 완벽하고, 배우들의 움직임은 품위와 자신감이 넘친다. 제일 어린 배우 조차도 천사처럼 노래 하고 움직인다. 작품의 이야기는 단순하고 친근하다, 진정한 사랑의 결실이 사회 관습과 환경에 의해 하마터면 좌절 될 뻔한 이야기. 서로를 사랑하는 젊은 남녀 한 쌍, 이들은 남자 아이의 아버지가 아들이 더 잘 되길 바라는 마음에 그를 황제의 궁정으로 보내므로 서로 떨어져 있어야 하는 처지가 된다. 이 때, 마을의 군수, 이 욕심 많은 악마는 어린 신부에게 사랑에 빠지고, 그녀가 그의 수청을 거절하자 그녀를 감옥에 가둔다. 마을 사람들에게는 엄청난 폭리의 세금을 강탈하고, 그로 인해 이곳 사람들 모두 고통을 받게 된다. 그러나, 우리의 젊은 영웅이 그의 고결 청렴함으로 황제의 눈에 띄게 되고, 붕괴되고 혼란에 빠져 있는 이 외딴 시골 마을의 수사를 위해 보내지는 행복한 결말을 맞는다. 이 작품의 가치는 최고라고 말할 수 있다. 특히 무대 의상은 두 눈을 즐겁게 하기에 충분하다. 배경 막에 프로젝터 영상으로 대신 보여지는 무대 풍경은?? 미적으로 손색없이 아름다울 뿐 아니라 융통성 또한 있어 보인다. 이 공연으로 우리의 아이들이 진정한 감동을 받을 것이라 확신한다. 그래서! 에딘버러 전역의 엄마 아빠, 그리고 할머니 할아버지들은 오는 27일까지 자신들이 가장 사랑하는 작고 귀여운 ‘달링’들에게 최고의 선물을 해 줄 수 있는 이 기회를 놓치지 말아야 한다.Jackie Fletcher (쟈키 프레처)


Choon-Hyang: True Love

Using lavish costumes and wonderful dances, 'Choon-Hyang' tells the traditional Korean story of a young couple in love and vowing never to part no matter what happens. It's a sweet, simple story so it's easy to follow, and their exaggerated actions make up for their accents, which some children may find hard to understand. The young performers in the production really are phenomenal and deserve all the praise they can get, and the mother of Choon-Hyang was especially good with her song about picking love over security. There was a sense that the songs would have been more powerfully sung in their native tongue, but there was enough action and dance to keep audiences of all ages entertained.

호화스러운 의상과 훌륭한 무용을 선보이는 공연, ‘춘향’은 사랑에 빠진 젊은 한 쌍이 어떤 일이 닥쳐도 절대 헤어지지 않겠다는 맹세를 담은 한국 전통 사랑이야기를 전한다. 달콤하고 일목요연한 이야기로 쉽게 따라갈 수 있고, 그들의 과장된 연기가 혹, 몇몇의 어린 아이들이 이해의 어려움을 느낄 수 있는 언어의 발음 부분에 있어서 빠짐 없이 보충해 준다. 이 작품의 어린 배우들은 정말이지 경이적이라고(Phenomenal)까지 표현 될 수 있어, 이들은, 이들이 받을 수 있는 모든 찬사를 받을 가치가 있다는 생각이 든다. 특히, 춘향의 어머니 역의 ‘월매’가 부르는 ‘담보가 될 수 있는 사랑’을 선택해야 한다는 이야기의 노래는 탁월했다. 만약, 이 노래들이 그들의 모국어로 불려졌다면 더 강하게 다가왔을지도 모르겠다는 느낌은 있었으나, 이 공연 안에서 보여지는 충분한 연기력과 안무는 이 곳의 어린아이들에서부터 어른들까지의 관객들에게 즐거움을 가져다 주기에 손색이 없다.
