A Korean folklore that came alive in the City had the audience hypnotised

The season is the magician of love. Love is the magic done by the season.¡± That¡¯s the spirit of the Korean play Choon-Hyang (True Love) which had its debut performance at the Ranga Shankara for school children above 10 years by Theatre Seoul.

The play is an old Korean folklore that has been passed down the centuries through an oral tradition. It tells the story of a young girl named Choon-Hyang who falls in love with a young man, Mong-Ryong. Proclaiming their everlasting love for each other, they are soon separated when Mong-Ryong is forced to leave the City to follow his father. In his absence, a cruel local ruler locks her up because she refuses to break her pledge of love for Mong-Ryong and marry him.

That¡¯s the basic plot of this innocent love story but it scarcely does credit to this wonderfully told enchanting production. Brimming with enthusiasm and packed with energy, the play was enacted in English by the children, for the children.

The kids had thrown themselves completely into the story-telling process. With an amazing narrative style, director, Kevin Kim managed to bring out the innocence and beauty of love, at the same time giving the audience a glimpse of traditional Korean music and dance forms. From the dramatic entry with beating drums to the lovely light shows on the projector to the colourful sets, the play kept the audience hypnotised till the end and the well-choreographed dances kept the children in the audience clapping and hooting continuously. One of the unique features of the production was its stunning colourful costumes which were almost entirely made of hanji paper that is known for its elasticity and strength.

On the whole, this feel good production managed to transport one to a magical place of vibrant and a traditional Korea with the help of imagery, music and dance. One sure hopes to catch more plays from them.
